Minor core, major core or only plugin updates?

We know that many developers and website owners dislike automatic updates without control. Of course, you do not want an update to “destroy” something that already works. Levels to update

Minor Core Updates – usually involves updates to the WP kernel that do not affect how your site works, however, it can provide you with updated protection against hackers and other issues that have been noticed. These updates come relatively often and our recommendation is to set them to automatic update.

Major Core Updates – Makes major changes to the WP core and may mean that you who have a WP site that does not 100% comply with WordPress’s recommendation on how to develop websites in WP may be required to make changes to your own code in order for everything to work. We recommend having a reflection of the site (internship) that is part of Velumi’s service where you have automatic updates and always check the site before pushing the updates to the live site.

Plugin Updates

Patch updates – Are often security updates, or small changes that should not interrupt the plugin’s features or appearance but only improve. We always recommend to auto update this level.

Minor updates – Means some major changes but often just improvements that should not break the basic functions, so it may be good to check these updates.

Major updates – These may be changes to a plugin that breaks the basic functions and may cause you to update some code or make other active changes to your WordPress installation. We always recommend updating this in your stage environment and checking that everything works before the update is done live.

A website that follows WordPress documentation on how to develop in WP should be able to have both major and minor core updates as well as plugin updates on automatic updates without problems. Testing is done!
